Attention and consciousness in different senses View all 18 Articles. Conscious perception and attention are difficult to study, partly because their relation to each other is not fully understood.
Sensation and perception are two separate processes that are very closely related. Sensation is input about the physical world obtained by our sensory receptors, and perception is the process by which the brain selects, organizes, and interprets these sensations. In other words, senses are the physiological basis of perception.

Attention , in psychology, the concentration of awareness on some phenomenon to the exclusion of other stimuli. Attention is awareness of the here and now in a focal and perceptive way. For early psychologists, such as Edward Bradford Titchener , attention determined the content of consciousness and influenced the quality of conscious experience. In subsequent years less emphasis was placed on the subjective element of consciousness and more on the behaviour patterns by which attention could be recognized in others. Although human experience is determined by the way people direct their attention, it is evident that they do not have complete control over such direction. There are, for example, times when an individual has difficulty concentrating attention on a task, a conversation, or a set of events. Attention has to do with the immediate experience of the individual; it is a state of current awareness.
The retinal image is just that, an image. Think of a digitized pixel map of different intensity and wavelength values at each x-y location on the retina. Although this is an oversimplification, it does characterize one of the problems that we are interested in understanding in this lab. How does it represent these two surfaces as being at different depths from the you, the viewer? How does it represent these two surfaces as belonging to two different objects the tree and road , rather than as two different surfaces of a single object different sides of a house. Remember, that the only information available, is how the quality of light is different at one x-y location on the retina compared to another. There are often multiple possible solutions to these problems that the visual system faces.
