Farmers need access to weather and market information to make decisions, especially as climate change alters historical patterns. Human basic needs, such as food, water, health, and shelter, are affected by climate.

Climate change

Climate change has been described as the biggest global health threat of the 21 st century. World population is projected to reach 9. While the principal cause of climate change is high consumption in the developed countries, its impact will be greatest on people in the developing world. Climate change and population can be linked through adaptation reducing vulnerability to the adverse effects of climate change and, more controversially, through mitigation reducing the greenhouse gases that cause climate change. The contribution of low-income, high-fertility countries to global carbon emissions has been negligible to date, but is increasing with the economic development that they need to reduce poverty. Rapid population growth endangers human development, provision of basic services and poverty eradication and weakens the capacity of poor communities to adapt to climate change. Significant mass migration is likely to occur in response to climate change and should be regarded as a legitimate response to the effects of climate change.

Author contributions: N. We investigate how future population growth is relevant to climate change policy. We calculate the best optimal emissions reduction pathway given each of these two different goals that society might have and calculate how much cheaper it would be to avoid dangerous interference with the climate given a smaller rather than a larger population. We also show that whether it is ultimately better to have a smaller population in response to climate change depends on which of these two goals society chooses. Future population growth is uncertain and matters for climate policy: higher growth entails more emissions and means more people will be vulnerable to climate-related impacts. We show that how future population is valued importantly determines mitigation decisions.

Global climate change affects many species and contributes to the exceptional population growth of wild boar populations and thus to increasing human-wildlife conflicts. To investigate the impact of climate change on wild boar populations we extended existing models on population dynamics. We included for the first time different juvenile conditions to account for long-lasting effects of juvenile body mass on adult body mass and reproductive success.

Climate Impacts on Society

Dear EarthTalk : To what extent does human population growth impact global warming, and what can be done about it? No doubt human population growth is a major contributor to global warming, given that humans use fossil fuels to power their increasingly mechanized lifestyles. According to the United Nations Population Fund, human population grew from 1. Think about it: It took all of time for population to reach 1. During that time emissions of CO2, the leading greenhouse gas, grew fold.

The effects of climate change on humans are far reaching and include effects on health, environment, displacement and migration , security, society, human settlement , energy, and transport.

The role of seeds in a changing climate - linking germination ecophysiology to population and community ecology. The general objective of SeedClim is to provide a mechanistic understanding of how ongoing and future climate change affects plants at landscape to regional scales. To achieve this we have developed a new methodological framework allowing us to explore how climate-change effects vary along two major climate gradients--temperature and precipitation--and how these effects scale across levels of organisation from individuals via populations to communities.

As a society, we have structured our day-to-day lives around historical and current climate conditions. We are accustomed to a normal range of conditions and may be sensitive to extremes that fall outside of this range. Climate change could affect our society through impacts on a number of different social, cultural, and natural resources. For example, climate change could affect human health, infrastructure, and transportation systems, as well as energy, food, and water supplies. Some groups of people will likely face greater challenges than others. Climate change may especially impact people who live in areas that are vulnerable to coastal storms, drought, and sea level rise or people who live in poverty, older adults, and immigrant communities.

The volume provides the first systematic in-depth treatment of links between two major themes of the 21st century: population growth and associated demographic trends such as aging, and climate change. The book examines the role of demographic factors in greenhouse gas emissions and asks how population affects the ability of societies and institutions to respond to the potential impacts of climate change.

The effects of global warming are already bringing harm to human communities and the natural world. Further temperature rises will have a devastating impact and more action on greenhouse gas emissions is urgently required. Population and climate change are inextricably linked. Every additional person increases carbon emissions — the rich far more than the poor — and increases the number of climate change victims — the poor far more than the rich. Population growth is also important because it affects the Earth's ability to withstand climate change and absorb emissions, such as through deforestation as land is converted for agricultural use to feed a growing human population. We are currently adding more than 80 million people a year to our global population. The UN projects that without further action to address population growth, there will be two billion more people by , and three-and-a-half billion more by
