With his translation of The Psalms, the great Biblical scholar Robert Alter set about to return to the original intentions of the authors of those songs, essential to Jewish and Christian liturgy, and if possible retrieve them from the imposed meanings of Christianity, particularly the salvational message revealed in Christ and emphasized in English translations from the King James Authorized Version to the present. His project also was to come as close as possible in English to the original, often multiple Hebrew meanings of each word. Those who believe his project succeeded seemed to have been as impressed by the conception —to wrest The Psalms away from Christian interpretation—as the actual accomplishment.
Robert Bernard Alter born is an American professor of Hebrew and comparative literature at the University of California, Berkeley , where he has taught since Robert Alter earned his bachelor's degree in English Columbia University , , and his master's degree and doctorate from Harvard University in comparative literature. He started his career as a writer at Commentary Magazine , where he was for many years a contributing editor. He has written twenty-three books, and is noted most recently for his translation of the entire Hebrew Bible. One of Alter's important contributions is the introduction of the type scene into contemporary scholarly Hebrew Bible studies. An example of a type scene is that of a man meeting a young woman at a well, whom he goes on to marry; this scene occurs twice in Genesis and once in Exodus , and, according to Alter, distortedly in 1 Samuel and in the Book of Ruth.

Еще немного - и купол шифровалки превратится в огненный ад. Рассудок говорил ей, что надо бежать, но Дэвид мертвой тяжестью не давал ей сдвинуться с места. Ей казалось, что она слышит его голос, зовущий ее, заставляющий спасаться бегством, но куда ей бежать. Шифровалка превратилась в наглухо закрытую гробницу. Но это теперь не имело никакого значения, мысль о смерти ее не пугала.
