Derrida and Phenomenology pp Cite as. Greeted from its publication in as a remarkable work, its influence has nevertheless suffered because of the simultaneous appearance of two other books which were more varied in composition and were without doubt more easily accessible: Of Grammatology and Writing and Difference. Sustained by new publications at an ever increasing rate, this fame has not ceased to grow, to the point of becoming, in the United States at least, a media and cultural phenomenon. This is not the place, however, to ask about the complex links that tie the joyful deconstructionist horde to a thinker who works in solitude and whose voice becomes more and more anguished. This new intellectual vogue which claims to take its inspiration from Derrida concerns us nevertheless in that it has distorted or even prevented, with few exceptions, a reading of Speech and Phenomena that would match the richness and ambitions of the text.

But even more than the re-conception of difference, and perhaps more importantly, deconstruction attempts to render justice. Indeed, deconstruction is relentless in this pursuit since justice is impossible to achieve. Derrida failed his first attempt at this exam, but passed it in his second try in The s is a decade of great achievement for this generation of French thinkers. In the early 60s, Derrida reads Heidegger and Levinas carefully. The recently published lecture course from —, Heidegger: The Question of Being and History , allows us to see how Derrida developed his questions to Heidegger. From then on up to the present, the word is bandied about, especially in the Anglophone world.

Re-thinking what we think about Derrida. Although many still see Derrida as a thinker opposed to a unified systematic meaning, there has recently been growing recognition that Derrida, in his later years, suggested that his work is not averse to formalisation. In support of this view, this paper points out that, in , Derrida himself told us that his first work of reveals a "law" which impels his career, and that some responses had arisen even there. Some benefits of adopting such a common pole are set out, and an interrelated "system" developed to relate the law of to the later responses, in order to help find a common, systematic base for Derrida's oeuvre. The need to accommodate approaches which are wary of a systematic approach is nevertheless acknowledged, and possible ways of reconciling the diverse readings of Derrida's intent and collaboratively furthering the formalisation of Derrida's oeuvre for posterity are outlined in closing.

Jacques Derrida , born July 15, , El Biar, Algeria—died October 8, , Paris , France , French philosopher whose critique of Western philosophy and analyses of the nature of language , writing, and meaning were highly controversial yet immensely influential in much of the intellectual world in the late 20th century. Derrida was born to Sephardic Jewish parents in French-governed Algeria. From the s he published numerous books and essays on an immense range of topics and taught and lectured throughout the world, including at Yale University and the University of California , Irvine, attaining an international celebrity comparable only to that of Jean-Paul Sartre a generation earlier. Examples include nature and culture , speech and writing, mind and body, presence and absence, inside and outside, literal and metaphorical, intelligible and sensible, and form and meaning, among many others. This fact is indicated by philosophical texts themselves, which invariably describe speech in terms of examples and metaphors drawn from writing, even in cases where writing is explicitly claimed to be secondary to speech. For Derrida as for Saussure, the meaning of a word is a function of the distinctive contrasts it displays with other, related meanings. The structuralists analyzed various cultural phenomena—such as myths , religious rituals, literary narratives, and fashions in dress and adornment—as general systems of signs analogous to natural languages, with their own vocabularies and their own underlying rules and structures, and attempted to develop a metalanguage of terms and concepts in which the various sign systems could be described.

Derrida and his Master’s Voice

Stamos, Yannis Speech, writing and phenomenology : Derrida's reading of Husserl. PhD thesis, University of Warwick. Request Changes to record. This thesis is a study of the two major texts of Derrida on Husserl's phenomenology. Engaging in a close reading of Introduction to the Origin of Geometry and Speech and Phenomena , this thesis tries to bring together, and reconstruct, under the title of speech and writing, those Husserlian questions which never stop occuping, motivating and intriguing Derrida's thought, from his student studies and the Introduction to Rogues These were the questions or themes of origin and of historicity, of scientific objectivity and truth, of reason and responsibility, as well as of the living present, of living speech, of egological subjectivity and the alter ego. The question that this thesis raises is the following: why are these Husserlian themes of historicity, of the idea of the infinite task, of the living speech, etc. Why is deconstruction, the event, the advent or invention of deconstruction, irreducible to some methodical or theoretical procedure, or to an operation of problematization or delegitimation of transcendental questioning?

Jacques Derrida

In Speech and Phenomena , Derrida articulates his mature relationship to Husserl, putting forward an argument concerning Husserl's phenomenological project as a whole in relation to a key distinction in Husserl's theory of language in the Logical Investigations — and how this distinction relates to his description of internal time consciousness. Derrida commented that Speech and Phenomena is the "essay I value the most". This early thesis then formed the basis for his paper "'Genesis and Structure' and Phenomenology.

Voice and Phenomenon

The ideal form of a written signifier, for example, is not in the world, and the distinction between the grapheme and the empirical body of the corresponding graphic sign separates an inside from an outside, phenomenological consciousness from the world. And this is true for every visual or spatial signifier. Apparently there is nothing like this in the phenomenon of speech. In phenomenological interiority, hearing oneself and seeing oneself are two radically different orders of self-relation. Between the phonic element in the phenomenological sense and not that of a real sound and expression, taken as the logical character of a signifier that is animated in view of the ideal presence of a Bedeutung itself related to an object , there must be a necessary bond. The appeal to this substance thus plays a major philosophical role.

- Solo el escroto.

Surely for this purpose it is wiser not to try a direct translation from Derrida's Heideggerian language into the more straightforward prose of American an- alytic.
