Metrics details. The contribution of front or back yards to sociability has been the subject of several studies. No such finding however is evident for side setback areas, short distances kept between adjacent buildings, which in the case of comparatively dense Japanese urban neighborhood environments can be as short as a few decimeters. The data for this preliminary step of the research was collected based on a carefully designed and explained survey of academics scholars throughout Japan. How did Elizabeth Anderson learn Japanese in ? In the war huge swathes of Japanese cities were destroyed by bombing and fire. Except in some country areas and in a few exclusive urban districts, the old style individual house generally ceased to exist. Space was at a premium and most living accommodation was cramped. It has been a long standing tradition in Japan that houses which are not meant to last more than twenty or at most thirty years should be regularly rebuilt and modernised. Based on the classification provided by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism MLIT , the damage level of buildings impacted by the Great East Japan tsunami can be separated into six levels from minor damage to washed away. The objective of this paper is to identify the significant predictor variables and the direction of their potential relationship to the damage level in order to create a predicting formula for damage level. The explanatory variables tested included the inundation depth, number of floors, structural material, and function of the building. Ordinal regression was applied to model the relationship between the ordinal outcome variable damage level and the predictors. The findings indicated that inundation depth, structural material, and function of building were significantly associated with the damage level.
