Researching the Continua of Biliteracy

University of Pennsylvania. Bilingual, Multilingual, and Multicultural Education. In the United States, often referred to as a nation of immigrants, language diversity has been ironically concealed from public arenas by the displacing ideology of English monolingualism. Minoritized languages have been acknowledged and respected, but they have not been actively promoted and included in mainstream schools. In this context, many immigrant communities have strived to maintain their languages and cultures through community-based heritage language programs. Previous literature has highlighted the challenges these programs face due to inevitable lack of support and resources, as well as the conflicts between immigrant youth and older generations.

Many subfields within sociolinguistics have been influenced by developments in linguistics and social theory over the past half century. This has certainly been the case in the field of language policy and planning LPP , which has incorporated new ways of thinking about language, society, and cognition, as evidenced by the published research in journals and books. This chapter considers the ways in which views on the nature of language, language ideologies, and language and identity have fundamentally altered the research agendas and foci in the field of LPP over the past several decades. It examines how these newer ways of understanding language in society have been applied to English-speaking countries, particularly with reference to North America. The motivation underlying much of this work reflected long-held, often implicit, views that modernization required a common national language to improve efficiency, develop nationalistic attitudes, and promote economic development. In general, the Western-influenced approaches to LPP in the developing world did not achieve the hoped for results, both in terms of language modernization or socioeconomic development.

Jeroen Oskam. Peter Williams. Public space quality is the backbone of a sustainable city. To ensure a quality public realm, cities need great streets, places where you intuitively want to stay longer, human scale inspired by interaction between buildings and streets, user ownership, placemaking, good plinths and a people-centered approach based on user experience. The importance of public space as a foundation for good cities is recognized across Europe both at a policy level and among practitioners. Through the Placemaking Europe network we have collected best practice examples and methods from hundreds of participants and we have shared them openly on our websites and in our publications. Through open source sharing, we build capacity and increase the impact of the placemaking movement.

Globalization

In addition, the linguistic ecology in South Africa is very different in that multilingualism is considered a defining feature of being South African, and there are 11 official languages, nine of which are indigenous African languages and two are the former colonial languages of English and Afrikaans. This has the unintended consequence of limiting epistemic access for the majority of African language students in township and rural schools. In addition, research has shown that in urban multilingual schools that were desegregated postapartheid, the hegemony of English persists, and the linguistic resources that African language students bring to school are ignored and even suppressed. Thus the underlying concerns of the advocates of bilingual or heritage language education in the global north do find common ground with the concerns around language and education for African language speakers in South Africa. This contribution is centered around the following question: What are the various ideologies about language and multilingualism held by teachers of a complementary Greek school in Canada? It focuses on the tensions between the multilingual nature of Canadian society and that of the Greek-Canadian children who attend this nonmainstream school, and the ideologies of teachers about teaching a community language in a Greek complementary school. Lengyel, L. Rosen Eds. Tertium comparationis. The multilingual context of Montreal, the context of complementary schools, in this case that of a Greek school, the research design, as well as the methodology are described.

Globalization , or globalisation Commonwealth English ; see spelling differences , is the process of interaction and integration among people, companies, and governments worldwide. Globalization has accelerated since the 18th century due to advances in transportation and communication technology. This increase in global interactions has caused a growth in international trade and the exchange of ideas and culture. Globalization is primarily an economic process of interaction and integration that is associated with social and cultural aspects. However, disputes and diplomacy are also large parts of the history of globalization , and of modern globalization.

Research Methods in Language and Education pp Cite as. The continua of biliteracy model offers an ecological framework in which to situate research, teaching, and language policy and planning in multilingual settings. The continua of biliteracy model was formulated in the context of a multi-year, comparative ethnography of language policy beginning in in two Philadelphia public schools and their respective communities. It proved useful in analyzing the data and drawing conclusions from the research and by the same token, the ongoing research informed the evolving framework. In the years since it was first proposed, the continua of biliteracy model has informed research locally, nationally, and internationally in Indigenous, immigrant, refugee, heritage, and diaspora language education contexts. Along the way, it has evolved and adapted to accommodate both a changing world and a changing scholarly terrain. Ongoing and future research on the continua of biliteracy addresses trends embedded in the framework and highlighted in this chapter — translanguaging, ecology of language, ethnography of language policy, and ideological and implementational spaces, as instantiated in language education policy and practice in local contexts of Indigenous and ethnic languages and global contexts of diaspora and language spread.

The New Critique of Ideology

Стратмор покачал головой. - Это и мне сразу пришло в голову.
